A video has surfaced showing the aftermath of a tragic incident in Los Angeles where police fatally shot a dog wearing a New York Knicks jersey. This occurred as officers responded to reports of a woman screaming. What was assumed to be a distress call turned out to be a celebration of the Knicks winning the NBA championship.
Shortly after the Knicks secured their victory in the NBA Finals, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) arrived at the scene. They were responding to an unrelated report of a screaming woman in Canoga Park, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, according to an LAPD news release.
According to the LAPD, upon reaching the location, officers were directed to an apartment. There, a resident answered the door with what the department described as a “large dog” barking. The officers requested the resident secure the dog, prompting her to momentarily close the door. However, when she reopened it, the dog exited the apartment.
The release states, “Once outside of the apartment, the dog charged at one of the officers, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS).”
The Los Angeles Department of Animal Services was informed of the incident, responded to the scene, and took possession of the deceased dog. The dog’s owner, who was present, cooperated with the investigation. The dog was named Jameson, according to the owner’s girlfriend, who spoke with NBC News.
Jameson was wearing a New York Knicks shirt, as captured in a viral video on TikTok that has been viewed over 15 million times. The footage depicts a woman lying over the dog’s body, wearing a blue and orange t-shirt, expressing her grief. “The Knicks just won the championship,” she cried out. “We were just so happy. We just celebrating the Knicks.”
Around six officers are visible in the video standing around the mourning woman, who expressed her disbelief. “This is absolutely crazy,” she remarked. “We didn’t do anything.” In the background, others voiced their anger toward the officers, with one individual shouting about local crime.
The LAPD later confirmed to NBC Los Angeles that the celebration following the Knicks’ win over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals sparked the initial noise. This victory marked New York’s first NBA championship in 53 years.
