Chicago White Sox Struggle in 12-2 Loss to New York Yankees

2 hours ago 0

The Chicago White Sox suffered a 12-2 defeat to the New York Yankees on Tuesday. Starting pitcher Davis Martin acknowledged the game unraveled quickly, with defensive missteps by Chase Meidroth and Jacob Gonzalez contributing to a troubling four-run second inning. Martin’s performance deteriorated further in the fourth inning, where he retired only one batter amidst a six-run onslaught.

This loss marked the toughest for the Sox since their season opener against the Milwaukee Brewers, which ended in a similar fashion, 14-2. Martin reflected on the challenges of playing in New York, stating, “This is a hard place to play. We have dreams of making the playoffs, and you need to win on the road too.” He emphasized the importance of learning and adapting, with the postseason in mind.

During the eighth inning, infielder Luisangel Acuña took the pitcher’s mound, allowing José Caballero to hit the Yankees’ fourth home run. Sox manager Will Venable acknowledged the need to address issues and improve in future games.

Martin’s record fell to 9-3 after conceding nine runs on eight hits and three walks over 3 1/3 innings. His ERA jumped from 2.41 to 3.31. He had previously maintained a 2.00 ERA but struggled in games against the Minnesota Twins and Yankees. Venable described Martin’s performance as “an aberration,” while Martin expressed confidence in bouncing back, stating, “This start by no means defines me or my season.”

The game also demonstrated issues with the Sox offense, which provided minimal support. Andrew Benintendi hit a solo home run off Gerrit Cole in the first inning, but the Sox were otherwise held hitless until Tristan Peters singled in the sixth.

Meidroth made a key error in the third inning by failing to tag a sliding J.C. Escarra, and Gonzalez made a misjudgment, contributing to an infield hit. Venable regarded this as a learning experience for Gonzalez, who is adjusting to playing first base. Martin expressed his frustration at losing control and not supporting his teammates defensively.

Martin stated, “Most nights I feel like I’m going to pick them up. It was just a bad night. Go to sleep. Wake up. New day tomorrow.”
