Afghan National Pleads Not Guilty in DC Shooting Case

1 hour ago 0

An Afghan national, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, pleaded not guilty to charges linked to a deadly attack on National Guard members near the White House. The incident resulted in the death of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and severe injuries to Guardsman Andrew Wolfe. These charges, unveiled by the Department of Justice, come under a 17-count federal superseding indictment. The indictment positions Lakanwal’s actions within the scope of capital punishment eligibility.

Justice officials allege that Lakanwal, formerly affiliated with the CIA in Afghanistan, committed the attack last November. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro emphasized the gravity of the crime, citing it as a significant offense against the United States. Pirro vowed to pursue all available legal repercussions to ensure justice for Beckstrom and Wolfe.

During the recent court arraignment, Lakanwal appeared in a wheelchair, dressed in an orange prison uniform, indicative of ongoing recovery from injuries related to the event. DOJ attorneys informed U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta about the commencement of a death penalty review process. The ultimate decision to seek the death penalty resides with Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

Lakanwal’s charges include first-degree murder while armed, assault with intention to kill while armed, and firearm possession during a violent crime. Judge Mehta has scheduled a status hearing for September 16.

Events leading up to the attack reveal that Lakanwal allegedly traveled from Bellingham, Washington, to the District of Columbia with a stolen firearm. Prosecutors claim Lakanwal engaged in shooting both Beckstrom and Wolfe in the head. Additional National Guard members on the scene subdued Lakanwal.

A stolen .357 Smith & Wesson revolver, traced back to Seattle in 2023, was recovered by investigators. Tragically, Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries on Thanksgiving, while Wolfe continues to recover.
