The match between Senegal and France at this year’s World Cup held immense significance for many African soccer fans. This encounter was seen as a chance for Senegal to confront its historical colonial ties with France. Senegal had achieved a surprising victory over France 24 years earlier, but this time could not overcome a French team largely comprised of players with African heritage.
Senegal has emerged as a prominent force in African soccer. The team has reached the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations four times in a row, securing one victory. Last year, Senegal initially defeated Morocco in the finals, but a protest led to a controversial decision that handed the trophy to Morocco.
“Senegal offers the best potential for an African success at the World Cup,” said Mark Gleeson, a South African sports commentator. He noted the intense rivalry with France was deeply rooted in their colonial past. “Senegal is umbilically attached to France, but they don’t want to be perceived that way. It is a strange relationship.”
The dynamics of migration, colonial history, and changes in FIFA regulations have significantly altered national teams’ compositions. European teams, especially France, have experienced the most notable transformations. For instance, France’s World Cup-winning team in 1998 was already dubbed the “Black-Blanc-Beur team,” highlighting the mix of Black, white, and Arab players.
Currently, eight out of the eleven players from France who faced Senegal were first or second-generation immigrants. Among them, Michael Olise, born in the UK to a Nigerian father and a French-Algerian mother, exemplifies the rich, multicultural tapestry that defines the modern French team.
This evolving composition is not unique to France; countries like Qatar also present diverse squads. Qatar’s team includes players from 11 different countries, predominantly African nations. This evolution in team composition reflects broader global migration patterns and changing societal norms, reshaping the face of soccer on the international stage.
