Less than 15 weeks ago, President Trump boldly declared that there would be ‘no deal with Iran except unconditional surrender.’ Despite his confidence, the outcome was unexpected for many.
On Wednesday, the details of the deal aimed at easing the conflict were made public. A senior administration official read the document, noting and defending each section. The document did not depict a surrender from Iran. In fact, Iran managed to exit the situation not only intact but with significant gains.
Tehran is set to resume its oil sales, potentially earning billions, which eases the financial strain on the regime. This comes as negotiations are being set for a more extensive agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear program for the next 15 to 20 years, something President Trump mentioned in a recent interview.
For a president who values leverage, the current arrangement raises questions. The ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ hints at possibilities for Iran to secure sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. This seems contradictory to recent statements from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who opposed any limitations on the previously established free passage through the strait.
The signed memorandum by both Iran’s president and President Trump outlines a scenario where Iran can access billions in previously frozen assets. President Trump emphasizes that this release is conditional on ‘good behavior.’ Critics note that this mirrors concessions seen during Barack Obama’s tenure, which Trump has often criticized.
In discussions with the media, President Trump frequently cites American victories during military engagements. The U.S. managed to sink Iran’s navy, dismantle its air force, destroy defense capabilities, and damage missile systems. However, Trump aimed higher. At the outset, he articulated goals of total destruction of Iran’s nuclear and missile projects, regime change, and potential U.S. control over Iran’s oil industry.
