Police have initiated a death investigation following a discovery made during a response to a fire on the Near South Side. Authorities responded to a location in the 1300 block of South Wabash Avenue shortly after 5 p.m. There, they found a 33-year-old man within the building with a gunshot wound to the head.
The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was in critical condition after suffering from a gunshot wound, a neck laceration, and smoke inhalation. Medical personnel later pronounced the man dead at the hospital. An autopsy is scheduled to take place on Thursday.
Police recovered a weapon at the scene. However, there is no information about potential suspects. Detectives from the Belmont Area are conducting the investigation.
