Goldie Hawn Criticizes Modern Celebrity Culture

3 hours ago 0

Goldie Hawn has shared her concerns about the current celebrity culture that gives attention to young people before they achieve success. During a discussion with social psychologist Jonathan Haidt at the 92NY center, the 80-year-old actress expressed her views on children and teenagers becoming social media influencers.

“It’s a nightmare,” Hawn remarked, emphasizing her worries about young influencers. She argued that many young people are not emotionally or cognitively prepared to handle fame and public scrutiny.

Hawn praised her long-time partner, Kurt Russell, as an exception in this regard. She stated that Russell’s early experiences in acting and professional baseball gave him the discipline and perspective to manage fame well. She contrasted his experience with today’s young influencers, who she believes are given no tools to handle quick fame.

Kurt Russell’s Early Career

Hawn described Kurt Russell, who has been acting since he was a child, as disciplined and grounded. She noted that his early career in baseball and acting helped him understand the importance of hard work and perseverance. According to Hawn, many young influencers today lack such foundations, making them vulnerable to the pressures of fame.

She also discussed how her career path was different. Hawn began acting and dancing young and believed success had to be earned through effort. She expressed concern that social media allows ordinary users to become celebrities overnight without earning their fame.

Hawn’s Personal Experiences

Hawn shared an anecdote from when she was a young performer, living alone in New York City while working at the 1964 World Fair. She recalled hoping to be discovered by the entertainment industry when approached by a man claiming to be associated with Al Capp.

The man, whom Hawn met for an audition, later made inappropriate advances. Despite the uncomfortable situation, Hawn did not comply and stood her ground. Her encounter with Capp, whom she later wrote about in her memoir, taught her the importance of caution in the industry.

Reflecting on her mother’s advice about the “casting couch,” Hawn emphasized the importance of developing skills and being ready for opportunities. She warned against the false self-esteem that can come from sudden fame, urging aspiring stars to be the best they can be.
