Superintendent Alberto Carvalho Resigns Amid Investigation

3 hours ago 0

Alberto Carvalho, who was hired in 2021 to lead the Los Angeles Unified School District, resigned on Sunday. His decision came months after the FBI raided his home and office in February due to a criminal inquiry into the district’s interactions with an A.I. start-up.

Carvalho, a notable figure in education, was recruited to oversee the second-largest school district in the United States. He had been on paid leave since February 27 after the board of education advised him to step back to ease tensions surrounding the investigation.

The question of his successor remains open. Andres Chait, a seasoned administrator in the Los Angeles Unified School District, has been serving as acting superintendent since Carvalho’s leave commenced.

His resignation, effective immediately, was announced through a letter addressed to both the district and members of the school board. The Los Angeles Times initially reported his resignation.

On Sunday, Carvalho did not offer any comments. In March, his legal team had released a statement asserting his innocence, stating that Carvalho was eager to return to his role. The statement emphasized that prosecutors had not presented evidence supporting any allegation of federal law violation against Carvalho.
