Kenny Chesney and Bill Maher Discuss Celebrity Political Influence

3 hours ago 0

Country music icon Kenny Chesney recently shared his thoughts with Bill Maher on Maher’s “Club Random” podcast. Chesney explained why he chooses not to use his platform to influence voters.

During the discussion, Chesney asked Maher if he likes rock legend Bruce Springsteen. Maher, a New Jersey native like Springsteen, confirmed he is a fan. However, he expressed regret that Springsteen’s politics often overshadow his music. Springsteen has been vocal on his liberal views, even facing backlash from fans and hosting an anti-Trump “No Kings” tour.

Comedian and writer Bill Maher has criticized celebrity endorsements in politics, especially after the 2024 election. He believes they seem out of touch and alienate the general public.

I just refuse to do it. I was very thankful when I came on your show in November that you knew I didn’t want to talk about that,” Chesney stated.

Maher acknowledged his show discusses a range of topics with diverse guests. He cited California Governor Gavin Newsom as someone he might discuss politics with in more depth.

Chesney shared, “I’ve just never felt like it was my place” to engage in public political discussions. Maher concurred, stating, “It’s not always everybody’s place.”

Chesney reflected on the role of celebrity ego, stating, “There’s a certain ego, I think, that lives in there and a certain box inside your head and your soul that you have to check…to think that you can make a difference.”

Maher agreed, noting that studies indicate celebrity endorsements may be counterproductive. “When celebrities talk…I think it has the opposite effect,” he argued.

Chesney added, “I’ve never seen it to be my place to use my stage or platform…to tell people how to think or how to vote. They hear that everywhere else.”

Maher previously suggested Taylor Swift could “save democracy” with her 2024 election endorsement. But after Kamala Harris’ loss, he’s criticized celebrity political rhetoric as unhelpful.

In a February interview with John Mellencamp, Maher pointed out, “You’ve got to cut your celebrities loose. You think they’re helping, but they’re actually hurting.” Mellencamp agreed, admitting a lack of true understanding among celebrities.

Harris’ 2024 election defeat, despite celebrity support, marked a shift in the belief that entertainers can sway elections.
