Father’s Day weekend 2026 became unforgettable for two youth girls’ softball teams after a game turned chaotic. During the USSSA Wood Grill Buffet/Everett Classic in Benton, Arkansas, a foul ball call by the umpire at first base led to an intense confrontation between a coach and the umpire.
The incident took place during the top of the fourth inning. Arkansas Pride 12 (13U) was leading 7-2 against Tulsa Elite NEA (14U). With a 3-2 pitch thrown, a hitter from Arkansas Pride sent a ball down the first base line, which was immediately deemed foul by the umpire.
The decision did not sit well with the Pride’s coach, leading to a heated exchange with the umpire. This confrontation escalated to a physical level with shoves being exchanged between the coach and the umpire.
A statement from the Tulsa Elite coaching staff, shared on social media, detailed their response to the incident. They affirm that their team was immediately moved to the dugout and stayed there while the situation unraveled. The staff noted that parents remained on the sidelines, except for one who tried to de-escalate the conflict.
Across the United States, tensions on baseball and softball fields have been rising, contributing to a decline in the number of umpires available for games. A 2023 national survey disclosed alarming findings: 69% of sports officials observed worsening sportsmanship, and one-eighth reported being assaulted during or after officiating games.
In this specific case, Tulsa Elite’s coach decided to forfeit the game for the safety and well-being of the players, emphasizing the undesirability of the behavior displayed and the impact it has on the sport.
Efforts to contact the USSSA Arkansas state director for comments remain unanswered.
