1 day ago 0

On Luka Modric’s 200th international cap, Croatia secured a narrow 1-0 win against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto. This victory keeps Croatia in contention for the World Cup’s round of 32 while eliminating Panama from the competition after only two matches.

Croatia’s Strategic Play

Panama began the match with an energetic performance, but Croatia’s tactical changes proved decisive. Substituting on Ante Budimir for the second half resulted in almost immediate success. The 34-year-old striker scored just eight minutes after entering the field. Goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic played a crucial role in preserving the win, showing exceptional skill.

With this result, Croatia holds third place in Group L, one point shy of both England and Ghana. A head-to-head encounter with Ghana awaits. The odds of Croatia advancing to the knockout stage are now at 95%, according to The Athletic’s World Cup tracker. Panama, unfortunately, exits the tournament despite showing potential.

Modric’s Historic Night

Luka Modric, celebrated by thousands of Croatian fans in Toronto, remains a key figure for the team. On achieving his 200th cap, he became just the fourth man to reach that milestone, joining the ranks of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Kuwait’s Bader Al-Mutawa.

Despite his legendary status, Modric faced challenges against Panama’s intense press. At 40, his movement was understandably cautious. Yet his leadership was evident when he created a promising chance for Pasalic, although the opportunity went unconverted. Modric was substituted ten minutes from the end, receiving applause from fans who appreciate his lifelong contributions to football.

“Volimo Modric” translated to “We love Modric,” encapsulates the sentiment of Croatian supporters.

After the match, Modric was given a Croatia jersey that celebrated his milestone, further honoring his iconic status.

Panama’s Brave Performance

Panama’s approach reflected a desire to attack and compete bravely. Under coach Thomas Christiansen, appointed in 2020, the team has aimed to establish a respectable footballing culture. His goal to put Panama on the world map resonates with the team’s commitment to positive play.

Despite their efforts, results have not favored Panama. Supporters value their style, filled with enthusiasm and ambition, qualities celebrated by their Federation President Manuel Arias.

Toronto’s Croatian Community

Toronto hosts North America’s largest Croatian diaspora. About 130,000 Croatians reside in the area, according to the 2021 Toronto Census. This community’s presence was felt as Croatian supporters gathered hours before the game, donning jerseys and flags to create an enthusiastic atmosphere.

The celebration included a 100-meter flag and a rousing version of “Moja Domovina.” Croatian fans made BMO Field feel like a home match venue, showcasing their passion and pride.
