Comedian Josh Johnson provided amusing insights on the transformation of the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial into an unlikely tourist hotspot due to algae and discoloration problems. During this summer, the pool has attracted attention akin to a major tourist attraction.
Appearing on Tuesday’s edition of ‘The Daily Show,’ Johnson dubbed the Reflecting Pool as ‘the first breakout hit of the summer.’ Despite public complaints about the pool’s condition, Johnson noted its unexpected popularity. He humorously compared visiting the pool to visiting Disneyland, quipping, Hey, kids, remember you wanted to go to Disneyland? Instead, we’re going to see the world’s largest kombucha!
Johnson reflected on the historical significance of the site, comparing present-day crowds to those gathered during civil rights movements. He quipped, The last time we collected this many people around the Reflecting Pool was for civil rights. People were like, ‘We must come out to support Dr. King.’ Sixty years later, we’re like, ‘A slimy pool? This I gotta see!’
Highlighting the challenges of pool maintenance, Johnson remarked that anyone familiar with cleaning pools, fish tanks, or other water vessels knows algae thrive under certain conditions. He noted, A shallow pool with a dark bottom in hot weather is particularly hard to keep clean.
He humorously critiqued Trump’s handling of the situation, suggesting he should have downplayed the issue from the beginning, saying, Trump, you got to wait until after you do something to flex. If you had never made a big deal out of the pool, no one would have noticed.
Overall, Johnson’s comedic take on the pool’s condition and its unintended popularity left audiences amused and entertained.
