Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis are transforming their concept album Warriors into a Broadway musical. The show is based on a 1965 novel, later adapted into a 1979 cult film, and follows the journey of a street gang called the Warriors. As they travel from the Bronx to their home in Coney Island, Brooklyn, they face threats from rival gangs and police.
This marks Miranda’s first full musical production since his acclaimed work on Hamilton. The Broadway adaptation of Warriors is scheduled to start previews in March and officially open in April at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Jenny Koons will direct the production, with a book by Miranda and Davis. Casting details are yet to be announced.
In a joint statement, Miranda and Davis expressed their excitement, saying, “Musicalizing such a vibrant world for the concept album has been thrilling, and now we’re coming out to play on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne.”
The Warriors album, released in 2024, retains the essence of the original story while introducing changes such as making the Warriors an all-women gang. The album featured a remarkable lineup of artists, including Ms. Lauryn Hill, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Billy Porter, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Marc Anthony, Colman Domingo, Cam’ron, Shenseea, and Joshua Henry.
The music on the album spans various genres, including salsa, ska, agro-rock, boy band pop, old-school rap, and K-pop, with a mix of Spanish and Korean languages alongside English. Notable tracks include “We Got You,” an R&B number performed by a male gang in cardigans, and “Quiet Girls,” described as a feminist anthem.
