Trump Cancels Housing Act Signing, Pushes for SAVE Act

2 hours ago 0

President Donald Trump canceled the planned signing of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. He issued an ultimatum to prioritize the passage of the SAVE America Act.

Trump announced his decision on Truth Social, stating, “Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby canceled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency.”

The Housing Act aims to address housing affordability by increasing the housing supply and reducing costs. It also seeks to prevent large institutional investors from purchasing single-family homes. Lawmakers passed the act with a vote of 358-32, indicating broad support.

Earlier, Trump criticized the act as being focused on Senator Elizabeth Warren’s interests. He downplayed its importance compared to the SAVE America Act.

The SAVE America Act includes measures for voter ID and citizenship verification, which Trump has long advocated. These components are seen as crucial with midterms approaching.

House Speaker Mike Johnson backed Trump’s decision, stating his commitment to advancing election integrity proposals. Johnson highlighted the act’s requirements for proof of citizenship and photo ID for voting, which has support from a majority of Americans.

Despite facing resistance, the SAVE America Act has shown progress in the Senate. Trump and supporters view it as a critical issue that transcends party lines.

The housing package involves months of negotiation, including a focus on restrictions for private equity investors and a proposal to ban central bank digital currencies. It also aims to ease regulations for factory-built homes and update local zoning policies to spur construction.

Many Americans struggle with housing affordability, with median home prices exceeding $400,000.
