On Wednesday, progressive candidate Iván Cepeda conceded the presidential election in Colombia to Abelardo de la Espriella. De la Espriella, a conservative outsider with the endorsement of U.S. President Donald Trump, emerged victorious. The election results indicated a narrow win for de la Espriella over Cepeda, by 1 percentage point, equating to nearly 251,000 votes.
In his concession speech, Cepeda addressed the nation stating, “We assume with serenity, responsibility, and absolute resolve — and let there be no doubt about it — the role that circumstances demand of us.” He pledged to maintain a democratic, vigilant, and constructive opposition.
The victory of de la Espriella, a businessman and lawyer with no prior political experience, is seen as a critique of the outgoing President Gustavo Petro’s administration. Cepeda had vowed to continue with Petro’s policies, including attempts to establish dialogue with armed groups through the “total peace” plan, which largely failed.
Electoral authorities released nearly all of the vote count just hours after polls closed on Sunday. However, both Petro and Cepeda did not initially accept the results, with Cepeda indicating he would wait for a recount before doing so.
