As the Winter Olympics approach, Milan has become the stage for significant demonstrations opposing the involvement of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the event. On Saturday, hundreds gathered in Milan to protest following the announcement that ICE agents would be present at the 2026 Winter Games to support diplomatic security, not to conduct immigration enforcement operations overseas.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security emphasized in a statement that ICE does not perform immigration enforcement actions in foreign countries. Despite these reassurances, protesters assembled at Piazza XXV Aprile, expressing their discontent with banners like, “No thank you, from Minnesota to the world, at the side of anyone who fights for human rights,” and “Ice only in Spritz,” as reported by The Associated Press.
Milan’s Mayor, Giuseppe Sala, conveyed his displeasure regarding ICE’s anticipated involvement. Referring to images of armed agents in Minneapolis, Sala pronounced on RTL Radio 102, “This is a militia that kills, a militia that enters into the homes of people, signing their own permission slips. It is clear they are not welcome in Milan, without a doubt.” Sala’s comments came before further details about ICE’s role were disclosed.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi remarked that while he had no specific information about ICE’s participation at the Olympics, he did not perceive any issues with their presence, as reported by the ANSA news agency. The Winter Olympics will predominantly take place in Milan, commencing on February 6.
Among the prominent attendees expected at the opening ceremony are U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
