Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Criticizes Media Ownership and Influence

4 months ago 0

Recently, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York expressed her concerns about the influence of affluent individuals on media ownership, specifically targeting CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss. During an appearance on former CNN host Don Lemon’s show, Ocasio-Cortez criticized what she terms an ‘oligarchical ownership structure’ within the media.

Ocasio-Cortez discussed a specific incident involving a ’60 Minutes’ segment on El Salvador’s Center for Confinement of Terrorism (CECOT). She alleged that Bari Weiss ‘killed’ the segment, which was initially slated to air earlier but was delayed until January. Ocasio-Cortez accused Weiss of being more concerned with pleasing wealthy backers than with journalistic integrity, facilitating a broader ‘censorship agenda.’

The CBS segment did eventually air on January 18, following an initial delay in December. Fox News Digital reported that Weiss decided to postpone the segment, citing the interviews as ‘powerful’ but ultimately feeling the story lacked readiness and momentum. Both CBS News and Ocasio-Cortez’s office withheld comments on the matter when approached by Fox News Digital.

Beyond CBS, Ocasio-Cortez also targeted The Washington Post, underlining concerns about its ownership by Jeff Bezos. She argued that media control by billionaires compromises journalistic independence. Ocasio-Cortez suggested Bezos’ involvement with the Washington Post since 2013 reflected an intent to steer media content towards specific political interests, particularly referencing its stance during the 2024 election season.

The Washington Post, under Bezos’ ownership, announced in 2024 a policy shift to refrain from endorsing political candidates in future elections. In early 2025, Bezos revealed policy changes within the newspaper’s opinion section, emphasizing a focus on personal liberties and free markets, disclaiming extensive coverage of opposing perspectives.

Ocasio-Cortez further remarked on media consolidation and executive influence, citing the cancellation of ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ on CBS as an attempt to suppress dissenting voices, particularly those opposing the current administration. She suggested similar patterns of control might be underway at other media entities and platforms, mentioning figures like Larry Ellison and Elon Musk.

Overall, Ocasio-Cortez’s commentary sheds light on ongoing debates over media ownership and editorial independence amidst economic and political pressures in current-day journalism.
