Sha’Carri Richardson Pleads Not Guilty to Speeding Charges in Florida

4 months ago 0

Olympic sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson has entered a plea of not guilty following her recent arrest for allegedly speeding excessively in Florida. The incident occurred last week, according to official court documents from Orange County.

Richardson, aged 25 and an Olympic gold medalist, was formally charged with the hazardous act of driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph, as per the legal records. She was reportedly stopped by law enforcement on January 29 while driving on State Road 429 near Stoney Brook Parkway in Winter Park. The arrest affidavit noted that her vehicle reached speeds of 104 mph in an area where the posted speed limit is 65 mph.

The affidavit further details that Richardson was observed changing lanes multiple times, flashing her headlights aggressively at other vehicles, and maintaining an unsafe distance from other cars on the road.

Upon being pulled over by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Richardson attributed her speeding to an underinflated back tire and mentioned that her familiarity with the new car was limited, leading to unintentional high speeds, as documented in the report.

Shortly after Richardson’s vehicle was stopped, fellow Olympic athlete Christian Coleman, 29, arrived at the scene. He pulled over in his black Jeep ahead of Richardson’s car and identified himself as her boyfriend to the deputy present.

Coleman initially complied with orders to remain by his vehicle, but later, he intervened to defend Richardson’s driving, as stated in the legal filing. Another Olympic sprinter, Twanisha Terry, aged 27, also arrived at the scene, stopping near the highway’s shoulder.

Both Terry and Coleman received citations for halting on a restricted-access road. Terry cooperated with law enforcement by providing her identification, after which she received a citation and left the scene. In contrast, Coleman did not disclose his identity, leading to his arrest for resisting an officer, the report notes.

Authorities found a “glass smoking device” containing “green leafy plant material” within Coleman’s car, positioned in the center console. Consequently, Coleman faced additional charges, including resisting an officer without violence and possession of drug paraphernalia. Also charged with having an expired vehicle registration for over six months, Coleman followed Richardson in pleading not guilty, as court records indicate.

Both Richardson and Coleman were processed at the Orange County Booking and Release Center. They secured their release on the same day by posting bond. Their legal representative has yet to offer comments on the matter. Contact attempts made to Terry’s attorney or representative also went unanswered. Meanwhile, USA Track and Field issued a statement clarifying they had no comment on the incident.

The situation continues to develop as court proceedings advance.
