In a recent conversation, NFL icon Steve Young shared his thoughts on the dwindling allure of the Pro Bowl since it shifted from a traditional football game to a flag football event. Speaking on “The Dan Patrick Show” before the current Pro Bowl Games, the former star quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers shed light on when he believes the event began to lose its charm with players.
“The Pro Bowl lost its luster when … the biggest beatings I’ve ever taken in my football career were at the Pro Bowl,” Young reflected humorously. “Why would the biggest beating … because you’re playing with elite players in the NFL and everyone’s been at the beach all week, so no one really knows the plays. And now Reggie White, or Bruce Smith, or whoever, is fully alert and not hungover,” he explained.
Young described the experience of participating in the Pro Bowl back in the day when the intensity of the game seemed irrational, especially after a grueling season. “I just finished the Super Bowl and now I’m going to the Pro Bowl. I loved being in Hawaii, but I wasn’t willing to take such a beating. So, it was irrational and unsustainable because who’s going to take that risk?” he said, referencing the toll it took on players at the time.
When asked about the future of the Pro Bowl, Young expressed optimism about the potential growth of flag football as the focus of the event. “The increasing global interest in flag football will likely catch players’ attention in the future,” Young remarked.
He emphasized the potential of the sport, noting that players might soon realize its value as it becomes an elite pursuit in its own right. “I think the Pro Bowl, if we keep playing flag, I think it will become something they will start to embrace themselves and not just see as a joke,” he concluded.
The Pro Bowl’s evolution continues, with the hope that the shift to flag football will offer a fresh and engaging experience for both players and fans.
