The family of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, has made a heartfelt appeal to her possible captors, seeking proof of life after she went missing last Saturday. Speaking on “Fox & Friends,” Ed Smart, whose own daughter Elizabeth was abducted in 2002, emphasized the importance of this approach.
“Talking directly to those that have taken her, the abductors, is crucially important,” Smart stated on Thursday. “That they know they are trying to comply with everything that’s being said, and they want to resolve this matter and bring their mother home.”
Elizabeth Smart had herself been kidnapped as a teenager from her Salt Lake City home and was held captive for nine months before being found. Her father noted that families often issue public statements to exert pressure on captors and assured their loved ones that efforts are being made to find them.
Role of Technology in the Investigation
Nancy Guthrie, aged 84, was last seen at her Tucson, Arizona home on Saturday evening. Though no suspects or motives have been identified by law enforcement, the occurrence of a crime has been confirmed. In a video released by the Guthrie family on Wednesday night, they urged anyone with information to come forward. The family acknowledged reports of ransom notes and expressed their willingness to communicate.
“We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her,” Savannah Guthrie, together with her siblings, stated. “We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen. Please reach out to us.”
The Importance of Public Awareness
During his daughter’s disappearance, Ed Smart explained how public statements were vital in keeping Elizabeth’s case in the public eye. He remarked that media coverage, particularly through social platforms, plays an essential role in such cases. Her abductors were eventually identified following her appearance on an episode of “America’s Most Wanted.”
“Her captors did make her aware that there was a search and that we were out there calling for her,” Smart recalled. He highlighted that even if Nancy Guthrie doesn’t directly hear these messages from her children, awareness of the search could have a profound impact.
“It’s challenging to determine whether Nancy can hear or not, but making that effort is essential,” Smart said. “Providing her with hope during this hard time is crucial so she can believe that this will be resolved and she will reunite with her family.”
