Maryland Governor Wes Moore Faces Dilemma Over Legislation on ICE Cooperation

4 months ago 0

The Democratic Governor of Maryland, Wes Moore, known for his potential presidential aspirations, is confronting a challenging political situation. This is due to an upcoming piece of legislation that aims to prohibit local law enforcement in Maryland from collaborating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Maryland General Assembly has recently approved a bill that seeks to terminate 287(g) agreements, which currently enable eight jurisdictions in the state to work alongside federal immigration authorities in detaining individuals and handing them over to ICE, as reported by Fox 45 Baltimore.

Governor Moore, perceived by many as a moderate, has publicly expressed his disdain for partisan politics and his support for law enforcement. This stance places him in a delicate position, caught between the demands from the progressive segment of his party to oppose ICE and the views of moderates and independents who may endorse ICE’s efforts to deport criminal illegal immigrants.

In recent weeks, Moore has voiced his opposition to ICE’s actions, especially as the Trump administration faces criticism following the deaths of two Minnesota residents amid encounters with federal immigration authorities. His spokesperson, Rhyan Lake, conveyed to Fox News Digital that Governor Moore is profoundly troubled by ICE’s activities both in Maryland and nationwide under the Trump administration. Lake noted, “Rather than targeting violent offenders or enhancing public safety, the current federal administration has generated disorder and diminished community safety. The governor has been unequivocal: Maryland is not a place for untrained, unqualified, and unaccountable agents. As with any legislation, he will evaluate the bill once it reaches his desk.”

In September, Governor Moore stated he is “not running for president” in 2028 and is enthusiastic about serving a full term should he be re-elected, although there are still speculations about his future presidential ambitions.

Julian Epstein, a seasoned Democratic operative and former chief counsel to the House Judiciary Committee, expressed concerns to Fox News Digital about the Democratic Party’s potential misstep in prioritizing the anti-ICE base for general elections. He remarked, “These sanctuary laws align with a secessionist and open borders ideology,” Epstein explained, “While they appeal to the progressive socialist left, they are not favorable for the party in a general election.”

Epstein, who authored an opinion piece for the California Post titled “How Democrats’ impossible ICE demands will grind enforcement to a halt,” warned that Democrats might not fully comprehend that “open borders present a class warfare against the working class, and the violent protests on Minnesota’s streets are not just unlawful but secessionist.” He underscored the importance of Democrats “coming to terms with reality.”
