Intense Race for New Jersey Democratic Primary Attracts National Attention

The competition for a vacant House seat in New Jersey, considered a Democratic stronghold, has ignited a heated contest among interest groups, political figures, and well-funded super PACs. This fight is seen as a critical step in shaping the Democratic Party’s future, one district at a time. The Democratic primary, seeking to fill the seat of U.S. Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill, has captivated the political scene with a diverse array of 11 candidates.

The field includes notable contenders like a former lieutenant governor, a past congressman, a grassroots activist, and other local political figures. Nearly $6 million has already been spent by outside organizations seeking to support their favorite candidates or attack opponents, and numerous prominent figures have given endorsements. This primary is crucial because the winner could potentially hold the district for years and even aspire to higher positions similarly to Sherrill. This scenario showcases the broader dynamics expected in various open primaries nationwide during this midterm election year.

Mara Novak and Judy Kelly, co-executive directors of the grassroots group NJ 11th For Change, emphasized the excitement among district voters. “People in our district, particularly in this bleak national environment, believe they have the opportunity to choose a representative who truly resonates with their views,” Kelly stated.

Notable candidates leading in fundraising include former Rep. Tom Malinowski, progressive activist Analilia Mejia, Essex County commissioner Brendan Gill, Passaic County commissioner John Bartlett, and former Army paratrooper Zach Beecher. The primary election will conclude on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET, with the Democratic victor expected to go against Republican Joe Hathaway, running unopposed for his party’s nomination.

Malinowski has been a focal point in the electoral campaigns, facing both support and criticism. The United Democracy Project, a super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), has invested nearly $2.3 million in campaigning against him, citing his stance on U.S. aid conditions for Israel. Additionally, the group has criticized his 2019 vote to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement in a bipartisan spending bill.

Malinowski has received a substantial boost from The 218 Project super PAC, which contributed over $700,000 in his favor, and has raised more than $1.6 million independently. The Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association’s PAC has also spent over $1.6 million in advertisements to support former Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way. Despite trailing in fundraising, Way has been portrayed as a formidable opponent to former President Donald Trump due to her legal disputes with him during her time as New Jersey’s secretary of state.

Way also received $350,000 from Article One Inc., a new super PAC related to a fundraiser fully supported by billionaire financier Robert Granieri. Simultaneously, VoteVets has launched a $300,000 campaign backing Beecher, highlighting his stance against Trump’s tariffs and foreign military actions.

The race has seen a flurry of endorsements from prominent figures. Former Gov. Phil Murphy supports Gill, praising his efforts to protect freedoms and lower costs, while Sen. Andy Kim endorses Malinowski, commending his congressional experience. Mejia has obtained endorsements from notable progressives like Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

National concerns such as immigration enforcement are critical to district voters, alongside local issues such as the Gateway Tunnel project connecting New Jersey and New York City. The Trump administration paused its funding, raising local interest in securing its completion.

Overall, the primary illustrates the uncertainty and variety of the district’s voter base. Endorsements from both national and local figures hold different weight across diverse towns. Democratic committees in Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties have endorsed various candidates based on county ties. LeRoy J. Jones Jr., chair of the New Jersey Democratic Party, rationalized these local endorsements, citing community familiarity as a deciding factor.

Darcy Draeger, chair of the Morris County Democratic Committee, noted Malinowski’s past representation as an asset due to voter familiarity and approval of his congressional service. With many candidates and a compressed timeline, Draeger believes previous familiarity and alignment with the centrist Mikie Sherrill’s policies will be advantageous.

The primary will be pivotal, with success likely hinging on candidates who can effectively mobilize their voters.
