LeBron James has been a constant force in the NBA, but his recent absence from the Los Angeles Lakers game against the San Antonio Spurs has marked the end of an extraordinary 21-year streak. For the first time since 2004, the basketball icon will not feature on any All-NBA teams, an honor he has consistently achieved throughout his illustrious career.
This setback comes as James records his 18th missed game of the season, making it mathematically impossible for him to meet the 65-game minimum required for league awards according to the collective bargaining agreement. This time around, his season began with a 14-game absence due to sciatica, a condition that proved challenging given he is now 41 years old. As players age, managing workload, especially during back-to-back games, becomes crucial. Just recently, the Lakers faced Oklahoma City Thunder, where they fell 119-110, before playing again the following night.
Tuesday’s game was especially tough for the Lakers, as they were missing several key players. Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves, and Marcus Smart were all out, as was James, who is currently sidelined with left foot arthritis. This left head coach JJ Redick searching for creative solutions to keep his team competitive.
“LeBron’s streak is unparalleled in the annals of NBA history,” noted basketball historians, highlighting his unmatched dedication and performance. Over the years, James has notched 13 first-team All-NBA selections, more than any other player, surpassing legends like Karl Malone and Kobe Bryant.
James’ journey started with being named Rookie of the Year in 2003-04 after an impressive debut with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He quickly followed that up with a second-team All-NBA selection in his sophomore season, continuously earning a spot on one of the All-NBA teams until this season.
Currently in his 23rd season, James continues to demonstrate his skills on the court, averaging 21.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game across 35 appearances. The Lakers are currently positioned fifth in the Western Conference with a record of 32-20.
While James’ All-NBA streak might have paused, his ongoing contributions to the Lakers and his status in the sport remain undisputed.
