Senator Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, was released from the hospital on Tuesday following a weeklong stay, and he is now working from home, as shared by his spokesperson on Wednesday.
David Popp, a representative for McConnell, stated, Senator McConnell was discharged from the hospital yesterday and is grateful for the outstanding care he received. He is feeling better and will be working from home this week on the advice of his doctors.
McConnell, who led the Republican Party in the Senate until the previous year, was admitted to the hospital on February 2 after showing flu-like symptoms,
according to his office. At 83, McConnell had announced last year that he would not seek another term, prompting a competitive primary race for his replacement.
In recent years, concerns about McConnell’s health have been growing, following several incidents where he appeared to freeze on camera. In 2023, he suffered a concussion from a fall, and back in 2019, he fractured his shoulder at home.
Last year, after experiencing multiple falls within the Capitol complex, McConnell was even seen being transported in a wheelchair by his team.
First elected to the Senate in 1984, McConnell served as the Republican leader in the Senate from 2007 until 2025. Though he supported Donald Trump’s presidential campaigns in 2016 and 2020, there have often been disagreements between the two.
In the previous year, McConnell voted against the confirmation of two of President Trump’s Cabinet picks: Tulsi Gabbard, who currently serves as director of national intelligence, and Pete Hegseth, now holding the position of defense secretary. McConnell has also been vocal about his opposition to Trump’s tariff policies.
