Economic Shifts in Pennsylvania’s Seventh Congressional District

The region from Scranton to Allentown plays a crucial role in deciding control of the House, with two swing districts present. Voters express significant economic concerns despite recent growth.

The Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, including cities like Allentown, is becoming more diverse. Allentown itself boasts a burgeoning economy with new developments such as a boutique hotel, specialty coffee shops, and high-rise lofts. This growth stems from industries like logistics, biotech, and high-tech manufacturing.

However, these economic changes have also led to increased living costs, impacting the working-class population. Brian Fasolino, a 28-year-old who recently returned to Jim Thorpe after military service, shares his experience. He secured a job installing piping systems but cannot afford to move out of his parents’ house.

“I was kind of hoping that things didn’t change all that much, and boy was I wrong,” Brian Fasolino remarked.

Pennsylvania’s Seventh Congressional District, situated on the state’s eastern edge, has shifted politically. In 2024, it changed from Democratic to Republican representation. Democrats are now counting on Bob Brooks, a retired firefighter and union representative, to reclaim the seat. Brooks emphasizes his relatable background, having used food stamps and lived in public housing during his youth.

“I think they can see themselves in me,” Brooks stated, emphasizing his shared experiences with district residents.
