A Texas high school student, Marco Hunter-Lopez, testified before a congressional subcommittee about receiving death threats after criticizing an Islamic group’s actions at his school. As president of the Republican Club at Wylie East High School, the 16-year-old gained attention for his objections to an Islamic booth distributing hijabs, Qurans, and a pamphlet titled, “Understanding Sharia.”
Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, invited Hunter-Lopez to speak at the “Sharia-Free America” hearing on May 13, hosted by the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Constitution and Limited Government. During his testimony, Hunter-Lopez described threats he received, such as people threatening violence against him at his home and being told to harm himself. He stated his faith in Christ helped him remain strong.
Hunter-Lopez argued Sharia law does not align with American values and the Constitution, criticizing the group’s distribution of materials without parental consent as a violation of school policies. He stressed that this promotion of Sharia law undermines school principles.
A notable exchange occurred with Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., who questioned the necessity of laws targeting specific religious groups. Hunter-Lopez countered by highlighting the Christian foundations of America’s legal system, noting the faith of the Declaration of Independence’s signers.
Hunter-Lopez’s testimony follows concerns from other conservatives, including the fallout after the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Hunter-Lopez pointed out that this incident motivated more students to express their views.
The testimony also addressed issues faced by the Republican Club at Wylie East High School, claiming the school administration initially resisted the club, targeted its posters, and selectively enforced policies. Wylie Independent School District (ISD) denied these claims, asserting they maintain neutrality regarding religious and political views. The district noted that a failure in procedural checks allowed an external group to meet with students, countering claims of favoritism.
Reps. Chip Roy and Keith Self, who have established the “Sharia-Free America Caucus,” argued that the incident reflects a broader issue of Sharia influence in Texas. Roy commended Hunter-Lopez for his courage, emphasizing the perceived growing influence of Islam in the state.
