In the town of Burlington, Kentucky, Representative Thomas Massie is in a challenging race to maintain his seat. Running against him is Ed Gallrein, backed by former President Trump. The contest has become a significant point of interest for Republicans, as a victory for Gallrein could demonstrate Trump’s strong influence within the party.
Recently, at an event just steps away from the Boone County Courthouse, Massie was approached by a young boy offering Pez candy. Massie accepted with a smile, remarking that Trump gives endorsements as easily as the boy hands out candy, yet not to him. This jab highlights Trump’s endorsement of Gallrein as retribution for Massie’s frequent opposition to the former president.
Massie, notably outspoken, opposed Trump’s tax legislation, considering it insufficiently frugal. He consistently voted against the war in Iran and criticized American aid to Israel, labeling it a taxpayer money misuse. He also played a key role in pushing for the Epstein files’ release, despite Trump’s objections.
Since first elected in 2012, Massie has not faced significant threats to his position. However, with Trump labeling him a ‘moron,’ ‘loser,’ and ‘total disaster,’ the stakes have heightened. Trump has chosen Gallrein, a dairy farmer and former Navy SEAL captain, as the preferred contender.
Massie claims his internal polling reflects a tie, though some public polls place Gallrein as leading. The outcome of this contest could define the extent of Trump’s grip on the Republican Party.
