Rescuers have located the bodies of four Italian divers inside an underwater cave in an atoll in the Maldives, days after they were reported missing. The search had paused following the death of a local military diver during the rescue attempt.
The bodies were discovered deep inside the cave by three Finnish diving experts, who were supported by Maldives police and military personnel. Government spokesman Ahmed Shaam stated that the divers were found in the innermost part of the cave, specifically in the third and largest segment. All four bodies were together.
Recovery plans include extracting two bodies on Tuesday, followed by the other two later. Previously, the body of Gianluca Benedetti, a diving instructor, was found near the cave’s entrance.
The divers involved were engaging in a private expedition involving a cave at a depth of 160 feet, exceeding the Maldives’ recommended diving limit. Their identities include Monica Montefalcone, an ecology professor, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, marine biologist Federico Gualtieri, and researcher Muriel Oddenino. Montefalcone and Oddenino were in the Maldives for a scientific mission, although the fatal dive was unrelated to this mission.
Harsh weather conditions had plagued the rescue operations, complicating efforts. Investigations continue into the cause of the deaths.
Experts warn that cave diving demands specialized training and strict protocols due to heightened risks in such environments. It’s easy for divers to become disoriented, especially at depth with poor visibility. The cave’s depth greatly exceeded recommended limits for recreational diving.
The Maldives has seen several diving accidents over the years, though they remain relatively rare. Notably, 42 of 112 tourist deaths in recent years were related to diving or snorkeling.
