Shelter-in-Place Order Lifted in South Austin After Shooting Suspects Arrested

2 weeks ago 0

Authorities have lifted a shelter-in-place order for areas in South Austin, Texas, following the capture of two suspects involved in multiple random shootings. The incidents occurred from late Saturday into Sunday.

Austin police announced, “The shelter in place for the South Austin area has been lifted, and two suspects are in custody. One remains at large in the Manor area. More information to follow.”

Mayor Kirk Watson detailed during a press briefing that several shootings had been reported across the area, including two that targeted fire stations. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis stated that the shootings seem random and investigators have yet to identify a motive.

Austin PD provided a final update around 7 p.m. local time. Watson expressed gratitude to all involved in the investigation before Davis reported that both suspects had been apprehended. One suspect had a warrant for gun theft from a store previously targeted by his partner. A stolen vehicle was reported before the weapon theft. The department received 20 service calls related to the suspects, who fired upon apartment buildings and fire stations, causing damage including to a fire truck. The suspects stole four vehicles during their spree. Both Watson and Davis thanked the public for adhering to alert notices and requested information from the community concerning Sunday’s events.

Identities of the Suspects

While the identities of the two suspects in custody have not been disclosed, police are still searching for a third suspect. Earlier descriptions referred to two Hispanic males in their late teens—one with medium wavy hair and the other with longer hair. It remains uncertain which of the suspects have been captured.

Authorities also disclosed information on three vehicles potentially linked to the shootings: a black Honda Accord, a gold Honda, and a white Nissan Altima. Mayor Watson remarked that the suspects seemed to switch vehicles during the crime spree.

Victim Details

Four victims have been shot; one sustained life-threatening injuries, while the remaining three endured non-life-threatening wounds. No further information about the victims is available, and it is unclear if any of them were fire station personnel.

Affected Neighborhoods

The initial shelter-in-place directive encompassed a vast region of South Austin, extending from Skyline Park to Dick Nicholas District Park. Although the order has been lifted for South Austin, residents in the Manor area should remain vigilant due to the ongoing search for the third suspect.

Recommendations for Residents

Davis urged residents to immediately call 911 if they notice anything suspicious and warned against approaching the suspected vehicles.

  • Secure personal vehicles.
  • Do not leave keys or key fobs inside vehicles.
  • Be wary of vehicle thefts during this crime spree.

Police emphasize that the investigation is active and ongoing, with further updates to follow.
