More than 40 Americans face up to six weeks in quarantine after a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship. Former patients who experienced previous virus isolations are sharing insights into their confinement experiences.
Dr. Kent Brantly, who was isolated for Ebola in 2014, assured that those quarantined are in excellent care. “I want those affected to know they are in capable hands,” he told NBC News. Three have died and 11 are ill since the outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise in early May. The 18 Americans on that ship were quarantined upon returning to the U.S. at facilities specializing in infectious diseases.
Quarantine Conditions and Experiences
Two patients were at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta before joining 16 others at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s National Quarantine Unit. Though none tested positive, the World Health Organization suggests up to 42 days of isolation. Emory’s biocontainment unit, opened in 2005, has a laboratory and rooms designed to contain pathogens.
As the first American Ebola patient treated there, I stayed in a well-equipped hospital room with constant monitoring, which included personal protective equipment for all medical staff,” Brantly shared.
Despite the medical focus, the staff supported Brantly’s holistic needs. “They not only managed my medical condition but cared for my overall well-being,” he noted. As he regained strength, he engaged in therapy exercises and conversations with staff members.
Current Experiences of Quarantine
Jake Rosmarin, a social media creator, is documenting his quarantine at Nebraska’s National Quarantine Unit. The facility has 20 rooms with air filtration systems. Rosmarin shares insider views with social media followers, showing a glimpse of his adapted quarantine room which includes personal touches like posters and a tea station.
Rosmarin stays positive, focusing on the care received and permitted activities. “I could be upset about being stuck, or I can appreciate being well taken care of and start counting down,” he remarked.
Rosmarin plans to abide by the 42-day period for safety reasons. “It’s the best decision for myself, my family, and the public,” he stated. He praised the responsive staff, emphasizing their attentiveness to any needs.
Insights from Past Quarantine Experiences
Carl Goldman spent a month in Omaha after contracting Covid-19 on the Diamond Princess cruise in February 2020. He described the biocontainment unit as surreal, akin to a movie setting. Despite limited medication, the continuous support met his needs while isolated.
Goldman kept engaged by writing and moving within his confines, avoiding excessive media interactions. Upon recovery, he was moved to a less restrictive environment with celebratory support from staff. Though takeout wasn’t allowed, Omaha Steaks generously provided meals after a media appearance.
Reflecting on his time, Goldman encourages current quarantined individuals to maintain optimism. “Treasure your memories,” he advises. “Think of it as an extended, involuntary vacation.”
