A gathering called “Rededicate 250” took place on the National Mall on Sunday, marking the United States’ 250th anniversary with a predominantly conservative Christian focus. The event featured Christian music, prayers, and speeches led by various religious leaders and members of the Trump administration.
Organized by Freedom 250, a public-private group in collaboration with the White House, the event aimed to “give thanks for God’s providence, reflect on our nation’s story, and rededicate America as One Nation under God.” Nineteen faith leaders were scheduled to speak, with 18 identified as Christian, mostly evangelical. Paula White-Cain, a senior adviser in the White House faith office, the Rev. Franklin Graham, and Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, were prominent speakers. Rabbi Meir Soloveichik of Congregation Shearith Israel in New York, and a member of Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission, was the sole non-Christian speaker.
President Trump did not attend, choosing to golf instead, but delivered a video message with scripture from 2 Chronicles 7:11-22. Other Trump officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, also delivered video speeches. Additionally, Congressional lawmakers such as Republican Sen. Tim Scott and House Speaker Mike Johnson participated, with Johnson leading a prayer emphasizing that rights derive from God, not the government.
Criticism arose, claiming the event blurred the separation of church and state. Interfaith Alliance projected supportive messages for religious freedom on the National Gallery of Art, while their social media described the event as an attempt at an “authoritarian theocracy.” Rachel Laser, CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, labeled it more “a jubilee of Christian Nationalism” than one promoting prayer, stressing that church-state separation is crucial for religious diversity in America.
Despite these criticisms, the gathering drew significant attention, highlighting the ongoing debate over religion’s role in government and American identity.
