Americans’ Skepticism on AI and Job Impact

2 weeks ago 0

Most Americans believe artificial intelligence will lead to a decrease in jobs within the U.S. They express concerns that go beyond job reduction. Many doubt whether the U.S. government will enforce policies to ensure AI technology is used appropriately.

This skepticism spans various age groups and education levels. A majority of both Democrats and independents doubt government effectiveness in regulating AI, while Republicans appear more divided over the issue.

A substantial two-thirds of Americans are unconvinced that government policies will ensure AI’s appropriate use. Those who hold this view often believe that AI will result in job losses in the U.S.

When considering why AI companies promote AI use, many Americans see motives such as gaining more power and replacing human workers with AI. Although a large majority share these concerns, smaller yet significant numbers also cite advancing science and medicine and simplifying tasks as reasons to support AI development.

AI and Employment Concerns

A consistent majority of Americans throughout the past year continue to think AI will lead to fewer jobs. Older and younger Americans alike foresee job reductions, although younger individuals feel less strongly about this. This difference might stem from younger people’s increased familiarity with AI. Past CBS News surveys indicate younger individuals report more frequent AI use and a better understanding compared to older age groups.

The CBS News/YouGov survey informing these insights includes a sample of 2,064 U.S. adults interviewed from May 13 to May 15, 2026. This sample is demographically representative, in accordance with the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey, as well as the 2024 presidential election outcomes. The margin of error for this survey is ±2.7 points.
