Fictional CEO’s Warning on Socialism and Communism

12 hours ago 0

In a world of politics, media, and finance, Danny DeVito’s portrayal of Lawrence Garfield in the 1991 film “Other People’s Money” stands out. Garfield, a fictional CEO, came from humble beginnings and identified with the working class. He deliberately appeared underestimated by elites, valuing morality over wealth.

In the movie, Garfield delivers a warning of socialism and communism’s dangers. In a tense scene with lawyers, he warns, “You’re destroying the capitalist system. When capitalism is in turmoil, communists return.” Despite being fiction, his message is eerily relevant today with figures like New York City Democrat Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson advocating similar ideologies.

The spread of socialism and communism is a growing concern for many. Older generations, who witnessed the collapse of East Germany, the Soviet Union, and Cuba, see echoes of those regimes in today’s political landscape. These older Americans now educate younger generations about the real threats concealed in popular socialist ideas.

Immigrants who fled socialist countries understand this reality all too well. Frequent examples from modern politicians provide opportunities to highlight the dangers. For instance, Mamdani aide Cea Weaver criticized private property, calling homeownership a “weapon of White supremacy.” Such statements alarm many who value homeownership as part of the American dream.

Socialism’s appeal is evident in cities like New York, Seattle, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Politicians promoting “collectivism” often disguise real consequences under promises of fairness. Yet, only a small segment of Americans fully embrace these ideas.

Over three decades ago, Garfield’s character saw the rise of communism as a threat. Now, in reality, Americans increasingly recognize this threat disguised as socialism. The hope is that voters will reject these ideologies through informed decisions at the polls.
