Years have passed since Formula 1 introduced the Sprint format. Surprisingly, Canada’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve had never hosted one until recently. It might be time for it to become a regular venue. The race showcased an intense title battle brewing between Mercedes teammates Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.
Both drivers secured the front row, with Russell on pole and Antonelli in second place for the 23-lap race. This performance seemed aided by a new upgrade package Mercedes brought to Montreal.
Russell had a strong start as the race began. Antonelli, who often struggles with starts, managed to stay close. Within a few laps, they were battling fiercely.
Antonelli attempted an outside move at Turn 1, appearing to take the lead through the apex. However, Russell came inside, forcing Antonelli off the track.
The 19-year-old championship leader expressed his frustration over the radio, unhappy with his teammate. Shortly after, Antonelli made another attempt and veered off track, allowing McLaren’s Lando Norris to take second place, where he stayed.
Russell won the Sprint, followed by Norris, with Antonelli finishing third. Antonelli’s second mistake might have been due to lingering frustration from the earlier incident at Turn 1.
The incident was contentious, with both drivers viewing it differently. This rivalry promises an exciting championship fight, benefiting fans but posing challenges for the team. Team boss Toto Wolff had to intervene, speaking to Antonelli multiple times during and after the race.
Mercedes is no stranger to intra-team battles. The infamous 2016 title clash between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton comes to mind, marked by their crash during the Spanish Grand Prix. It remains to be seen if this new rivalry will reach similar levels, but the stage is set for an intense season.
