Former First Lady Jill Biden has expressed concerns about Joe Biden’s health during his 2024 debate performance. She feared he was having a stroke due to his prolonged silence, confused expressions, and stammered speech. In a CBS interview, Jill Biden admitted, “I don’t know what happened. I thought, ‘Oh my God, he’s having a stroke,’ and it scared me to death.”
Understanding Stroke Symptoms
A stroke can result from brain bleeding or blocked blood flow, as described by the Mayo Clinic. Detecting a stroke can be challenging because of varying symptoms. The American Stroke Association (ASA) recommends using the acronym “B.E. F.A.S.T.” to identify strokes:
- B – Balance loss
- E – Eye (vision) changes
- F – Face drooping
- A – Arm weakness
- S – Speech difficulty
- T – Time to call 911
If stroke symptoms are suspected, the priority is to call 911, according to Fox News medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel. Siegel warns against using aspirin, as it may worsen bleeding in the brain if hemorrhagic stroke is the cause. Ischemic strokes, in contrast, might benefit from such medication.
The Importance Of Immediate Treatment
The ASA highlights that 1.9 million brain cells die every minute a stroke goes untreated, emphasizing the importance of rapid medical response. “Time is brain,” says Siegel. Expedited access to emergency treatment can reopen blocked brain arteries, if present. Brain imaging, ideally undertaken upon arrival at the ER, is crucial within the first few hours.
According to the CDC, individuals experiencing a stroke should not drive themselves to the hospital. Immediate medical assistance, accessible via 911 or an ambulance ride, is recommended as treatment begins during transit.
Stroke Prevention Measures
The American Heart Association notes that 80% of strokes are preventable through measures like controlling high blood pressure, diabetes, and atrial fibrillation. The CDC states that one in four survivors will experience another stroke within five years, underscoring the need for a prevention plan.
