Time magazine is under scrutiny for its cover story on Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner. Platner, a controversial figure, is featured on the cover of the June 8 issue with the headline, “Party Crasher: The rise of scandal-plagued Democrat Graham Platner.”

In a social media post, Time highlighted Platner’s notable ascent in politics, stating, “Graham Platner’s rise in this antiestablishment moment is remarkable. His candidacy challenges the party on what it’s willing to risk for a fighter.”

Platner has been involved in numerous controversies. He allegedly has a tattoo identified as a Nazi symbol. Archived posts from his Reddit account include offensive sexual remarks, self-descriptions as a “communist” and “socialist,” and derogatory comments about a Purple Heart recipient.

The magazine’s portrayal sparked backlash, particularly from conservatives on social media. Elizabeth Pipko, former Trump campaign spokesperson, commented on perceived media bias by contrasting reactions to Platner with past criticism of Trump.

Stephen L. Miller, a commentator, remarked on historical parallels by referencing Time’s past choices, like naming Adolf Hitler as “Man of the Year” in 1938. Others voiced similar sentiments, highlighting inconsistencies in media portrayals.

Platner showed a covered tattoo in Portland, Maine, emphasizing the ongoing debate over its symbolism. Despite the controversies, Platner remains the leading candidate after Governor Janet Mills exited the race, trailing in both polls and fundraising.

Platner’s potential win in the Democratic primary means he will challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins in a crucial election that could influence the Senate’s political balance. Time and Platner have not responded to these issues publicly.
