The Justice Department has taken significant steps to realign its approach regarding the investigation into the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021. These measures appear to align with President Trump’s efforts to recast the narrative of that day’s events.
On Friday evening, federal prosecutors in Washington initiated efforts to dismantle some of the most severe criminal charges related to the Jan. 6 attack. This included motions to dismiss cases involving leaders and members of far-right groups tried and convicted on charges of seditious conspiracy.
Additionally, the department confirmed on one of its official social media platforms that it is removing many of its online archives of news releases that documented charges filed against the Jan. 6 rioters.
From 2021 to 2025, the Justice Department’s investigation into the riots was its largest criminal inquiry ever. Over 1,600 defendants faced charges. However, following President Trump’s clemency for all defendants during his second term, the department has progressively dismantled efforts to hold rioters accountable for disrupting the presidential transition after the 2020 election.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and other senior officials played key roles in establishing a $1.8 billion fund. This fund aims to compensate Trump allies claiming to have suffered injustices under previous Democratic administrations. Many involved in the January 6 riots have expressed satisfaction with the fund’s creation, planning to submit claims for compensation.
The official movements to dismiss sedition cases targeting members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers signify another attempt to eliminate remnants of key criminal proceedings from the Capitol assault. While these individuals already received pardons or commutations of sentences, the complete dismissal of charges represents a symbolic victory. Such dismissals would allow veterans among them to regain military benefits previously terminated due to convictions.
