Elgin High School’s Bicentennial Time Capsule: A Journey Back to 1976

The time capsule created by the Elgin High School class of 1976, sealed 50 years ago, was unveiled recently without any IBM stock certificates. The contents reflected the quirks and trends of the era, featuring items like mood rings, bell-bottom pants, and one standout piece: a Pet Rock.

Gale Miller, who was part of the bicentennial committee, expressed nostalgia at the capsule’s opening. Together with Principal Avelira Rodríguez González, she examined the items inside the wooden box sealed on June 7, 1976. Miller had anticipated finding items like cigarettes or humorous objects, but found herself pleased with the selection made by students.

A folder was included containing photographs of the high school, former Principal Richard Felicetti, and students. It was a bicentennial year, marking 200 years since the nation’s founding. Some pictures showed Miller and others in costumes riding in a horse-drawn wagon to teach about life in 1776.

Rodríguez González found amusement in the musical announcements and expressed interest in singing the announcements herself. Items such as The Mirror, the high school newspaper at the time, and clippings about Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign were included. A catalogue from JCPenney, an EHS yearbook, and a dress code document were also found, outlining strict rules about hair length and clothing choices.

A letter dated June 7, 1976, signed by Felicetti, detailed instructions for opening the capsule. Miller, a 1977 graduate, knew the capsule had been stored at a bank that later returned it to the school. She contacted Rodríguez González to locate it, leading to its discovery.

Alumna Gale Miller watched as the capsule was unlocked, alongside Mari Gathman, an Elgin High graduate and teacher. Gathman cherished the photos from her student days. The event rekindled fond memories for Miller, affirming her positive experiences at Elgin High School.

The class of 1976 intends to commemorate their 50th reunion in August, celebrating both a historic milestone and cherished memories from their past together.
