Caring for Mets Fans During a Difficult Season

2 weeks ago 0

The New York Mets are once again renowned for their knack for losing games in a stylish and unexpected manner. As a long-suffering Mets fan, this season feels like a unique blessing in disguise. Despite signing notable free agents and maintaining one of the most expensive rosters in the league, second only to the L.A. Dodgers, the Mets have failed to meet the expectations set for this 2026 season. With Memorial Day approaching, marking about a third of the season, the team has lost more games than it has won, achieving one of the poorest records in baseball.

An intriguing outcome of the Mets’ dire start is the considerable attention I have received from people who know me as a Mets fan. Some are familiar faces from years past. Their concern manifests through consoling texts, memes, gentle teasing, and sometimes, outright ridicule, especially from Yankees fans.

For those who have reached out with concern for my well-being, rest assured, I am coping well. As a lifelong Mets fan, these experiences are familiar. However, I recognize there are others who might need support during this challenging baseball season. Therefore, I offer advice for those who have Mets fans in their lives and wish to help them through this:

  • If you are a Yankees fan, refrain from commenting or offering any “advice.” Mets fans do not appreciate it.
  • Showing empathy and understanding is the key. Casual check-ins showing genuine concern can provide much-needed comfort.
  • Engage in lighthearted conversations but avoid overly mocking or pitying attitudes. This situation might seem trivial, but it’s a consistent part of a Mets fan’s emotional landscape.

This season might indeed prove to be another long and difficult one for the Mets and their fans. Yet, with the right approach, support from friends and family can ease the ongoing emotional burden.
