Travelers often find themselves with time to spare after clearing security at the airport. The Portal Lounge at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport aims to enhance this waiting period. Opened on May 28, this lounge offers a modern twist on traditional airport amenities.
Revolutionizing the Airport Lounge
Jordan and Emma Walbridge, the creators of Gameway, have expanded their gaming concept to a unique experience at MSP. Portal Lounge integrates gaming, dining, music, interactive design, and robotic drinks in an engaging environment. Unlike typical lounges that focus on exclusivity, Portal prioritizes social interaction and entertainment.
The lounge covers 3,800 square feet and can accommodate 114 guests. With a futuristic entrance and art deco-inspired interiors, it is designed to draw travelers in and keep them entertained until they board their flights.
Gaming at the Forefront
A major highlight of Portal Lounge is its 17 dedicated gaming stations. Travelers can enjoy a range of games on Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, and custom-built PCs. This innovation appeals especially to adults aged 30 to 39, a significant segment in both gaming and travel markets.
Emma Walbridge mentioned, “Gameway taught us that travelers appreciate environments that offer interaction and engagement.” Thus, Portal Lounge expands beyond gaming to an overall experience that includes music and food, delivering a refreshing airport visit.
Innovative Bartending
The lounge introduces a robotic bartender, a first of its kind in a U.S. airport lounge. Developed in Italy, this robot crafts cocktails and mocktails, combining function with entertainment. While the robot is a striking feature, the traditional bar atmosphere remains integral.
“For us, technology enhances the experience,” stated Jordan Walbridge. “Our aim was to create an environment that feels modern and immersive from entry to exit.”
Beyond beverages, the lounge offers chef-driven small plates and regional drinks inspired by Minnesota, making the Portal Lounge a destination that reflects local culture.
An Evolving Traveler Experience
Traditional airport lounges have relied on basic amenities like snacks and Wi-Fi. Today’s travelers seek more. Portal Lounge offers access through Priority Pass and certain credit card programs. Walk-in access is available, with expected fees around $70.
For travelers with extensive layovers or delays, the cost of access might be justified by the diverse activities offered. Portal Lounge seeks to transform airport waiting from a chore to a highlight of the journey.
A Perfect Fit for MSP
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport serves approximately 36 million passengers annually. With many arriving early, Portal Lounge capitalizes on this available time by providing an engaging space for travelers. Its offerings entice guests to spend layovers enjoying local flavors and interactive activities rather than simply waiting at the gate.
According to Emma Walbridge, “The goal is for travelers to feel that their airport time became part of the trip itself.” This approach seeks to redefine how travelers perceive and use their idle time at the airport.
While the lounge’s offerings may not suit everyone, it aims to cater to those who view downtime as an opportunity for fun and engagement.
