Sally Field Praises First Amendment on ’60 Minutes’

2 weeks ago 0

Actress Sally Field recently appeared on television to emphasize the significance of the First Amendment in today’s politically charged atmosphere. Speaking on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” Field recalled a lesson from her seventh grade that left a lasting impression.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press or the right of the people peacefully to assemble,” Field recited.

The two-time Academy Award winner expressed her deep, personal understanding of the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of free speech.

“It’s the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I barely knew what it meant at the time. Now, almost 67 years later, I understand it like never before,” she stated.

Field’s acknowledgment of the Constitution marks a notable recognition of American heritage from someone in Hollywood. Amid a period where several in the entertainment industry have used their platforms to criticize U.S. policies, her statement underscores a different perspective.

Recently, the entertainment industry reacted after Renée Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother, was killed by a federal immigration agent during an operation in Minneapolis. The incident caused public anger and renewed discussions on immigration enforcement.

At the Golden Globes, stars like Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, Natasha Lyonne, and Jean Smart wore protest pins reading “Be Good” and “ICE Out” in memory of Good.

Miss Field stressed the importance of protecting everyone’s right to express their views, including her activist colleagues. She acknowledged the role of the First Amendment in safeguarding these rights.

“I have the right to speak out, make a sign, and peacefully join a protest without fear of punishment. I’ve learned that democracy is fragile and must be protected,” Field said. “The brilliance of our Constitution begins with ‘We the People.’ I believe in its resilience and in the strength of the people.”

Sally Field is celebrated for her diverse career spanning six decades. She has won two Academy Awards for Best Actress, in 1979 for “Norma Rae” and in 1984 for “Places in the Heart.” Her notable filmography includes “Forrest Gump,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and her Oscar-nominated role in “Lincoln.” Representatives for Field have not provided further comment.
