Key Roles in California’s Statewide Elections

5 days ago 0

California is not only focused on the race to replace Governor Gavin Newsom. Voters will also choose several important statewide officials to serve alongside the new governor in Sacramento. Unlike the governor, these roles have specific duties. With the exception of the attorney general, they do not often provide a platform for public speaking. However, these officials perform essential functions for the state. Their responsibilities include managing taxpayer investments, ensuring government accountability, overseeing elections, and addressing home insurance issues following historic wildfires.

Attorney General

The attorney general serves as California’s top law enforcement officer. This role has gained prominence, especially in contesting federal policies from the Trump era.

State Treasurer

The state treasurer manages the state’s Pooled Money Investment Account. They invest funds for the state and local jurisdictions and allocate state bond financing. This financing supports projects related to education, infrastructure, the environment, and affordable housing.

Secretary of State

The secretary of state is central to administering statewide elections. They provide voters with information about ballot measures and candidates and oversee campaign financing and lobbying activities. This office also handles business licensing and filings.

State Controller

The controller uses audits and reports to ensure accountability within government entities and agencies.

Lieutenant Governor

The lieutenant governor assumes the governor’s duties if the sitting governor dies, resigns, or is removed from office. This official also serves on state college and university boards.

Insurance Commissioner

The commissioner regulates home, auto, and other insurance types. In recent years, this office has been focused on issues related to fires and homeowner insurance.

Schools Superintendent

This position oversees the California Department of Education, guiding local school districts and providing partial oversight. The superintendent often uses their platform to address educational issues.
