Burt Jones, the leading Republican candidate for governor in Georgia, positions himself as a strong supporter of efforts to reverse Donald J. Trump’s election defeat in 2020. This stance has become a central theme in his campaign.
Throughout his campaign, Jones frequently highlights his involvement in the 2020 election controversy. Speaking to an audience in a gun store in suburban Atlanta, he emphasized, “You’ve got to think back to who was standing up — who was in the ditch, in the foxhole — with everybody when we were fighting in 2020.” His remarks suggest a sense of camaraderie and shared struggle during that period.
Jones recently secured the most votes in Georgia’s Republican primary for governor, with endorsement support from President Trump. He now prepares for a runoff on June 16 against Rick Jackson, a billionaire with strong pro-Trump views.
Despite advancing in the primary, Jones’s past actions related to the 2020 election continue to influence his political journey. Many consider his efforts to challenge the presidential election results a significant element of his political identity. Few state officials were as involved as Jones in efforts to maintain Trump’s presidency.
The New York Times analyzed thousands of documents from state and federal investigations to detail Jones’s actions during the post-election period. These documents include public records and leaked materials from the unsuccessful Georgia criminal case against Trump and his allies.
The documents reveal that Jones, then serving as a state senator, collaborated with the Trump campaign and communicated directly with Trump. During a rally in 2020, Trump publicly acknowledged Jones, referring to him as “in my pocket.”
