Pope Leo XIV, originally from the United States, is not new to voicing his opinions on global issues such as immigration and warfare. Now, he turns his attention to artificial intelligence, challenging powerful figures in Silicon Valley. On Monday, at the Vatican, he presented his papal document titled “Magnifica Humanitas,” or “Magnificent Humanity.” This document marks a significant theological statement in his papacy and represents an influential moral stance on AI by a religious leader.
Leo XIV emphasizes the need to reflect deeply on the trajectory of AI. He urges A.I. leaders to examine critical questions about the goals and values driving technological development. “Crucial questions impose themselves on our conscience and can no longer be avoided: Where are we going? Toward what goal do we wish to orient ourselves? What direction should we choose as a people and as a human community?”, he stated. He seeks to steer the technology towards ethical usage by injecting Catholic moral values into the predominantly secular tech industry.
The Pope calls for AI to be “disarmed,” advocating for its removal from being a tool of domination and harm. This mirrors the church’s past support for nuclear disarmament. Leo XIV’s speech at the Vatican emphasized freeing AI from destructive logics.
The document’s release resembled a high-profile launch event, featuring bright yellow banners and an introductory video, collaborating with EWTN, a globally recognized American Catholic network.
