Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, thousands of Russians fled their homeland, establishing a makeshift community on the Thai resort island of Phuket. While this community remains vibrant, there is a sense of transience among its residents.
Life on the Island
Among these émigrés is Ekaterina Mittsel, who has settled into life on Phuket with her family. Despite the tropical weather, the island offers a variety of Russian cultural touches, ensuring that families like the Mittsels feel connected to their roots. The community enjoys facilities such as Russian saunas, grocery stores stocking familiar ingredients, and restaurants serving dishes like cold borscht.
The Mittsels moved to Phuket four years ago. Ekaterina’s daughter, Alisa, maintains a busy schedule with choir, gymnastics, and Russian lessons, keeping ties to their native culture alive. “We meet friends here more often than in Moscow,” Ekaterina remarks, highlighting the robust social life they have built in Phuket.
Cultural Integration and Influence
The Russian influence on the island is more visible given Phuket’s history as a favorite destination for Russian tourists. The Russian state airline, Aeroflot, provides regular flights. Some Russian celebrities have also included the island in their international tours, reflecting the strong connections still existing between the island and Russian citizens.
Community and Comfort
The Russian community may be temporary, yet it is thriving. The blend of local and Russian cultures provides a comforting environment for those who have chosen Phuket as a refuge from the instability of their homeland.
