Former President Donald Trump used Memorial Day to critique Democrats, referring to them as “Dumocrats” in a message shared on Truth Social. Trump expressed, “Happy Memorial Day to all, including the Dumocrats, who disrespect our Military and all of the tremendous success that it has had over the last year. God Bless those that have made the ultimate sacrifice. I love you all! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
In a subsequent post, he continued, “The Dumocrats have BAD POLICY, AND BAD CANDIDATES. Other than that, they are doing quite well! President DJT.”
Trump’s use of Memorial Day messages to criticize political opponents extends a pattern of politicizing the holiday, which traditionally serves as a neutral time to remember military personnel who died in service. According to Newsweek, last year Trump also used his social media platforms to attack federal judges and political adversaries on the same day.
This Memorial Day, Trump plans to visit Arlington National Cemetery. A report from the Daily Wire states he will participate in a ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, joined by administration members, Gold Star families, and military personnel. Scheduled attendees include Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and other senior figures.
These activities continue his tradition of engaging in memorial events, as he did last year with a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington. Trump praised service members who have given their lives for freedom and safety.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier honors unidentified service members and is located at the highest point of Arlington National Cemetery. The cemetery, which houses over 430,000 military personnel, veterans, and family members, historically traces back to the George Washington family estate.
Trump faced scrutiny for his decision not to attend his son Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding during the Memorial weekend. Politico reported that Trump cited “circumstances pertaining to Government” as his reason for staying in Washington, D.C., suggesting significant matters required his presence.
