Ludovic Mbock, an expert Street Fighter player, recently found himself at the center of a highly publicized incident involving ICE detention. After six weeks in detention, he was released in March on a $4,000 bond. Since then, he has had to contend with an ankle monitor, which he is conscious of each morning.
Despite these challenges, Mbock recently participated in the Combo Breaker game festival in Schaumburg, Illinois. The gaming community rallied around him, raising $100,000 to support his release.
Mbock’s situation highlights the challenges some immigrants face. Although the warm Maryland weather might have encouraged him to dress casually, the presence of the ankle monitor has been a persistent reminder of his recent experiences.
“It’s May in Maryland. It’s nice and toasty outside. Ludovic Mbock would love to wear shorts, but he does not because people would stare.”
