Jannik Sinner’s quest for a career Grand Slam faced a significant setback as he exited the French Open in the second round. The world No. 1, with a winning streak of 30 matches, suffered a surprising defeat, losing 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 to the world No. 56, Juan Manuel Cerúndolo of Argentina. This loss was unexpected, especially since Sinner was close to victory, just four points away.
The conditions contributed heavily to Sinner’s defeat. Initial predictions highlighted the weather as a major challenge. Previously, he struggled with similar issues during the Australian Open, where the heat almost led to his dismissal. In Shanghai, high temperatures and humidity forced him to retire from a match due to cramps.
Unlike in Melbourne, where a heat rule provided some relief, Paris offered no such respite. On Court Philippe-Chatrier, with temperatures soaring to about 90 degrees, Sinner’s performance wilted in the heat. He had been in control, leading 6-3, 6-2, 5-2, and serving for the match. However, the heat took its toll, and he lost 18 straight points, nearly collapsing on the court.
Seeking medical assistance after feeling dizzy, Sinner briefly left the court, returning still looking unwell. Cerúndolo seized this opportunity, closing the gap on Sinner and bringing the match to two sets to one.
Despite a short recovery break, Sinner failed to regain dominance. Cerúndolo maintained composure, saving critical break points and forcing Sinner into exhausting rallies. This strategy, combined with Sinner’s waning strength, allowed Cerúndolo to take the fourth set 6-1.
The final set continued in the same vein, with Cerúndolo succeeding in absorbing Sinner’s attacks. Sinner, unable to sustain the necessary energy for a comeback, watched Cerúndolo take a 4-0 lead. After saving break points to reach 5-1, the outcome became apparent. The once-promising Grand Slam title slipped away.
As the 2026 French Open progresses, the men’s draw appears more open than in years. Sinner, considered a favorite following the exit of two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz, must now confront the impact of extreme weather on his career ambitions.
For Cerúndolo, this victory marks the most significant of his career, moving forward to face Spain’s Martin Landaluce or Vít Kopřiva of Czechia in the third round. This win represents a turning point and a chance to advance further in the tournament.
