Members of Journey are currently on their Final Frontier Tour, which is expected to run until the end of November. Keyboardist Jonathan Cain has discussed the band’s decision to retire. Speaking on the Rock & Roll High School podcast, Cain attributed his long career to the dedication of fans.
I think the only reason I’m still out here is the fans, you know?
he stated. It’s time for me to close the chapter. It’s a beautiful time to say goodbye, for me.
Cain also reflected on Journey’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. During the ceremony, former singer Steve Perry accepted the award with the band but chose not to perform. Cain hoped Perry would join for a song.
I was certain — I would have bet money he would’ve changed his mind and come and sang ‘Lights’ with us or something, but he didn’t, which was weird,
Cain mentioned. I would have bet money that he was gonna come to soundcheck the day before and show up. I kept looking in the wings and he never came.
It seems unlikely Perry and Journey will reconcile, though anything is possible. Perry previously denied rumors of joining the farewell tour, so a reunion is not expected.
Cain expressed during the interview that Perry is always welcome on our stage any time,
which leaves the door open for future possibilities. Cain once started a rumor about Perry being on tour, possibly out of wishful thinking.
As one of the iconic names in rock music, Journey’s departure is significant. Their tours have spanned decades, and retirement marks a new phase. While the situation with Perry remains unsettled, fans celebrate Journey’s contributions to music.
