U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon filed a motion on Friday requesting the recusal of Atlanta U.S. District Judge Eleanor Ross. This follows Ross’s attendance at a partisan Democrat fundraiser for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, which raised questions about Ross’s impartiality.
Additional allegations have surfaced regarding Ross’s conduct. Reports state that she engaged in extramarital affairs with Atlanta deputy police chief Kelley Collier in her judicial chambers during work hours, actions overheard by her staff. These activities reportedly spanned several years.
Staff members who reported Ross’s behavior experienced retaliation. The federal judiciary only issued Ross a private reprimand, a disciplinary action considered by many as insufficient. Calls have been made for her resignation or possible impeachment by Congress.
The Atlanta Police Department frequently appears in cases before Ross’s court. Though an overlap in their roles was unintentionally avoided, concerns about potential conflicts of interest remain. Ross is married, as is Collier.
Ross’s extramarital activities became public when a former law clerk reported them. Despite the serious nature of these allegations, Ross maintained her innocence when confronted. Her denials were described as false statements during an inquiry led by Eleventh Circuit U.S. Chief Judge William Pryor.
The lack of public disclosure about Ross’s reprimand has raised transparency issues. The public’s right to know about such misconduct is emphasized, with calls for Congress to introduce legislation for more ethical oversight of the federal judiciary.
Despite an agreement that Ross would not serve as chief judge of the Northern District and would apologize to affected former staff, she retains all benefits of her federal position. The Justice Department is urged to conduct a criminal investigation, and there are calls for her impeachment in the House of Representatives.
Georgia U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff has not commented on the situation. Ross remains seated on the federal bench in Ossoff’s home state. Her actions have been criticized for embarrassing the judiciary and her silence is noted by the public and his constituents.
Ross has been urged to resign and allow for a replacement who upholds judicial conduct. If she remains, impeachment and further investigation into her alleged false statements and obstruction are advocated, ensuring the judiciary maintains its integrity.
